The Family Who Cosplays Together Meets Peter Capaldi Together!
I always enjoyed a good cosplay – from someone else. It was fun to watch the folks wandering around a fan convention dressed up as favorite movie and comic book characters. But you’d never ever catch me doing it …..
Ever.
Not in a million years.
This leads to…
This.
This leads to….
And this leads….
To this awesomeness!
And finally…..
Why I chose to Cosplay
So here’s the story 🙂 We’ve been going to fan conventions for a few years now, but I’ve never ever dressed up for one. I never had the build for a particular character I cared about portraying, I was in it to accompany my menfolk more than being a part of it myself, and it was just so much fun watching everyone else.
But that all changed this year. I don’t know why, really? Maybe I found a character I loved, that I felt I wouldn’t get laughed at for portraying, and that my boys all got so excited for me even mentioning that I was considering it? I couldn’t pass up that chance to partake in their joy and in their fun. So I put aside my self-absorbed feelings, dug through my closet (and I was just a wee bit embarrassed that I had all the makings of Molly Weasley without having to do anything more than buy a wig and hat), and joined in the fun.
I was really, really self-conscious for a long time. But it’s when little kids would scream “MRS WEASLEY” in delight at me that I realized that it was just all in great fun, kids were really enjoying it, and I embraced the spirit. You won’t catch me donning a Wonder Woman costume, mind you, but I can see me doing this a time or two in the future, maybe 😉 And when my husband and I were walking together, it was so much fun for people to stop us to take photos with us. So much fun to know that we’ll be adding to their memories in the future, too!
Here are more of our memories from the day ….
Here is Percy Jackson, Arthur Weasley, Steve from Minecraft and Molly Weasley.

…and then came Peter Capaldi
I’m not gonna say that I didn’t sneak a few shots when I wasn’t supposed to … and I won’t say that I knew the quality wouldn’t be the greatest.
But it was so awesome to see him in person. Not only did he do an autograph appearance, he did a free panel for everyone, then the photo session at the end.
Here is just the craziness of him arriving on stage for the panel he did.
He was a delight. He was very encouraging of the ‘fan’ because he’d been one growing up. I didn’t record the whole panel discussion, but you can see an upload of it here.
The Photo Session
It was a bit of a cattle drive to get to do the photo session with him. Wait in line for a long time, then you are moved into the photo area, and you get to see him with the folks ahead of you. You’re told over and over again by the handlers to not talk to him or shake his hand because they’ve got to move the line … and then Peter was awesome. He grabbed our hands, introduced himself, told us how much he loved our costumes and then posed with us for a great photo. He did a different pose with everyone (not the same stock pose each and every time). And then we were pulled aside and shown the back entrance as the next fans were shown in. It was over so quickly, but still really awesome!
Have you ever cosplayed for any reason? Halloween is a great one …. tell me about your costumes!
